Matt Menzl's 2007-2008 Season Review
Concordia's Matt Menzl has literally put the Falcon athletics on the national map during his three years on the Mequon campus. His ambitious 2006-2007 radio and TV broadcast schedule included over 100 athletic contests that Falcon fans across the country enjoyed via the internet. Menzl, the only non-athlete ever inducted into the Cedarburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame, began his sports broadcasting career while in middle school under the tutelage of professionals like Jim Paschke (Milwaukee Bucks) and Wayne Larrivee (Green Bay Packers).
"I began recruiting Matt when he was a high school junior," said Concordia assistant Athletic Director Rick Riehl. "It was clear from what he had accomplished media-wise for Ozaukee County athletics that he could have as positive and powerful an impact on this university's sports scene as any prospective student athlete in southeastern Wisconsin." Menzl works for FSN Wisconsin and Time Warner Sports calling various high school and collegiate games and is a part-time Westwood One employee during the pro football season.
Matching Menzl with technically talented James Saleska, a Falcon soccer player and graphic design major, paid immediate dividends, according to Riehl. "Matt knew the shots
and effects he wanted and James had the expertise to accomplish those goals on our limited budget."
The current Falcon duo of Menzl and sophomore Nathan Schwanz will broadcast over 100 2007-8 contests.
"Unless Matt signs early and leaves us for the BIG TIME, we will have another year minimum on the cutting edge of collegiate broadcast journalism," quipped Riehl.
