Jennifer Knox twirled a masterful 3 hitter and teammate Jenna DiMaggio scored the game’s only run as the Falcons guaranteed themselves a .500 season with a 1-0 win over Marian in the first game of Tuesday’s season-ending doubleheader.
Di Maggio doubled in the Falcon third and eventually scored the game-winner on a two out passed ball. The host Sabres, who finished third in the NAC regular season at 18-6, used four pitchers at various times in this game.

Marian (25-13) turned the tables in game two, limiting the Falcons to two base runners while sprinting to a 10- 0 win. Amanda Vandenack had CUW’s only hit and Rachel Mathes took the loss as the Falcons ended their season at 19-19. Steve Crook’s team finished just out of the NAC's 6 team playoff picture at 14-10.

Edgewood 9 Concordia 8
Concordia needed a sweep of Edgewood to have a chance to make the 4 team NAC Championship playoff field, but the Falcons were one pitch short. With CUW leading 8-6 and two down in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles’ Colleen Joyce hit a 3 run homer to cap a 5 run rally and send Concordia to a bitter defeat.
CUW appeared to have salted the game away with a 5 run sixth that featured home runs by Megan Coburn and Emily Bennin. Tara Wagner had 3 hits for the Falcons.

Wagner, Coburn, and Amber Nero had multiple hits as the Falcons came back to win the nightcap. Jennifer Knox held the Eagles to 4 base knocks as she elevated her record to 7-5 on the season.
Wagner drove in two of CUW’s third inning runs and Erica Thiede and Nero doubled home tallies in the fourth and fifth respectively. Concordia improved to 18-18 on the season with the game two win.

MSOE’s leadoff hitter slapped as single but that was the only hit that the winless Raiders got in an abbreviated first game. CUW’s Erica Thiede was the hitting star with a single, double, and triple.

The Falcons needed only nine hits to complete the game-shortened sweep because MSOE hurlers supplied 14 walks. Ashley Fyock (3-3) and Thiede (2-2 with another double and triple) supplied offense as Concordia improved to 17-17 on the season.

CUW sprang the first surprise with a big second inning, strong defense, and lots of heart. Game hero Ashley Fyock (3-3 on the day) led off the Falcon second with a single and Emily Bennin drew a walk. After an out, Angela Ward scored both runners with a double down the left field line. Ward scored the Falcon’s third run of the frame on a two out infield error.
Benedictine threatened throughout, leaving nine runners in scoring position. The host Eagles finally knotted the score at 3-3 in the fifth with a pair of tallies.
Then came more Fyock as she doubled to lead off the Falcon sixth and eventually brought home the game winner as pinch hitter Kyla Pieper grounded out.
Benedictine had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the ever-present Fyock threw out the potential tying run at the plate and another infield grounder ended this thriller. Jenna Di Maggio (7-8) got the win in a route-going performance while Brittany Carnell (12-5) was charged with the loss.

One would expect the home team, sporting a 21-10 record, to come back with a vengeance in game two, right? Yet, after a scoreless first it was the Falcons who once again assumed early control. Hits by Fyock, Megan Granger, and Tara Wagner accounted for three CUW second inning runs.
Concordia got an unearned run in the third and two more in the sixth when hits by Jenna Di Maggio, Bennin, and Ward brought in what turned out to be the runs needed to leave town with a pair of W’s.
Jennifer Knox (6-5) got the win with a BIG seventh inning save by Di Maggio, who snuffed a rally that had the potential winning run on base.
The double your pleasure victory party upped the Falcon record to 10-8 in the NAC, while Benedictine fell to 16-4. The Falcons are 15-17 overall while the Eagles dropped to 21-11 overall on the season.

Emily Bennin’s bat and Jenna Di Maggio’s arm were key ingredients in the Falcons’ 5-4 game one win over the visiting Regents.
Bennin doubled in a pair of first inning runs to give CUW a 2-1 lead and singled to plate what turned out to be the winning tally in the Concordia fifth. DiMaggio, meanwhile, held Rockford to 5 hits and a pair of earned runs. Rachel Homp also had a pair of base hits for Steve Crook’s club.

Two big offensive innings keyed the second game win. CUW got four runs in the first, thanks to five separate hits and then added five more runs in the sixth via another five hit rally. Meanwhile Jennifer Knox limited Rockford to eight hits and two earned runs in a route-going performance.
Tara Wagner, Emily Bennin, Angela Ward, and Erica Thiede each had two hits during the contest as CUW improved to 8-8 in the NAC while dropping Rockford to 4-14.

CUW rallied in the final inning against the league leaders, scoring three times to get within two runs, but a line drive out was turned into a double play that ended the contest.
Losing pitcher Jenna Di Maggio had three of Concordia’s 8 hits as the Falcons fell to 6-8 in the NAC and 11-17 on the season. Aurora is 15-1 in the league after the game two scare.

Powerful Aurora used 11 hits, seven of them for extra bases to race pace the Falcons in game one of Sunday’s twin bill. Six of those hits were part of a 10 run third inning for the Spartans. The Falcons were held to 4 hits. Ashley Fyock was 1-1 with a walk and scored the lone Falcon run in the fifth.

It looked to be so easy in the first game of Saturday’s NAC doubleheader in River Forest, Illinois. The Falcons led 10- 0 in the third and waltzed to victory in a game shortened to five innings. Emily Bennin had a huge 3-4 power performance with a pair of home runs and six RBI’s. Jenna Di Maggio held CU- C to three hits and went 2-2 at the plate herself.

Leading 6-4 in the sixth inning of the second contest, the visiting Falcons appeared poised for a sweep against CU- Chicago (4-18). The Cougars rallied to tie, however, and then pulled out the win by scoring six runs in the first extra frame.
Ashley Fyock had a run scoring double and solo home run for CUW and Bennin (6-8 on the day) chipped in with 3 singles, but 9 errors led to 8 unearned Cougar tallies as the Falcons fell to 11-15 on the season. Di Maggio took the loss in relief of Jennifer Knox.

Sara Roberts’ arm and the collective Muskie bats were too much for CUW in the opener. Lakeland banged out 11 timely hits in the process of cruising past the Falcons 9-0. Roberts allowed only four harmless Concordia singles in a game that was ended by run rule after six innings.

The second game involved constant opportunity and resultant frustration for CUW as the Falcons got to Roberts for 11 hits but could not dent the scoring column until the final inning.
Lakeland, meanwhile, got a 3 run homer from cleanup hitter Alison Lock in the process of building an insurmountble 6-0 lead.
Ashley Fyock had 3 hits for CUW and Erica Thiede added a pair of singles, but 8 Concordia runners were left in scoring position. The Falcons fell to 5-5 in the NAC and 10-14 overall with the double dip. Lakeland is also 10-10 overall but 9-3 in the league.

Visiting Maranatha managed only two hits and three total base runners against Concordia’s Jennifer Knox in the five inning first game.
CUW batters were the gracious recipients of twelve walks and four Crusader errors in the one-sided contest. Megan Granger had a pair of hits, including a bases loaded double, and drove in five runs for the Falcons.

Wisconsin Lutheran, 11-3 in the NAC, pulled out a pair of home field wins over CUW (3-3) yesterday. In game one the Falcons battled back from an early 5- 2 deficit to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Warriors, however, responded with a pair of their own tallies to secure the win.
Jenna Di Maggio was the hard-luck loser for Concordia as her teammates committed four infield errors leading to five unearned WLC runs. Di Maggio, Rachel Homp and Megan Granger had two hits each for the Falcons who host Maranatha in a 3:00 PM twin bill today.

Game two saw a complete turnaround as the Inferno scored six times over the first three frames to grab a 6- 1 cushion. Winning pitcher Jessica Goetz was amazing as she drove in all six Alverno runs with a pair of home runs (one a grand slam) and held the Falcons at bay. Ashley Fyock had two of CUW's 5 hits as Concordia (3-1) lost for the first time in NAC play.

CUW had no problem with the Stars during a 23- 5 first game win. Besides pounding out 14 hits, the Falcons were the recipients of 13 walks. Rachel Homp, Tara Wagner, Emily Bennin, and Lauren Koeppen had two hits each as Concordia bolted to an 11-0 3rd inning lead and then added a 12 run 5th.

The nightcap was an entirely different game as the Falcons had to rally from a 2-0 5th inning deficit to pull out a 4- 2 win.
Rachel Homp led off the decisive 5th with a bunt single and stole second. Ashley Fyock reached base when the right fielder muffed her short fly ball with Homp moving to third. Then Tara Wagner’s infield roller was booted by the Star shortstop, allowing Homp to score and Wagner to reach second safely.
CUW’s Jenna DiMaggio’s single loaded the bases before an Emily Bennin base hit tied the game. Next, Erica Thiede was hit by a pitch to force home the lead run. Megan Coburn’s sacrifice fly drove in Wagner with the inning’s final tally and the Falcons held on to move to 2-0 in the NAC.

Hope scored 8 times on 10 hits in the first inning, leaving no doubt as to the final outcome in the Falcon season opener. Megan Granger’s second inning homer provided the Falcon’s only tally. Catcher Angela Ward added a 2-2 performance for CUW.

Preview
The 2007 Falcons finished 12-8 and in the top half of the NAC, taking 3rd in the 13 team conference tournament. CUW will have to replace Sarah Rennicke and Angi Hilgendorf who shared mound duties over the past four seasons. Hilgendorf will join Julie Barthel as Steve Crook's assistant coaches in the 2007-2008 season.
