Edgewood 72 Concordia 70
Shae Beckwith's short jump shot with five seconds left in overtime provided the game-winner as 4th seeded Edgewood (17-10) upset the Falcons 72- 70 in the NAC semi- finals, ending CUW's bid for a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.
It seemed as though each time the Falcons and Eagles got together, the game was intense and went right down to the final possession with CUW pulling out a harrowing win. That was a script that had played out seven consecutive times over the past three seasons...but not last night. This time Concordia's late game magic was outdone by an even more amazing escape act by the Eagles' Janelle Gosh at the end of regulation and the overall performance of talented Megan Scheele (26 points and 14 rebounds).
CUW looked overpowering in the early going, building a 24- 7 lead in the first ten minutes. Fouls sent several starters to the bench, however, and Edgewood clawed within 31- 27 at the break. The Eagle surge continued once Falcon post players Krista Mayyou, Pearl Wallace, and Jenna Ferron were each whistled for their 4th fouls inside the 10:00 mark of regulation.
Eventually Edgewood, behind amazing 57% second half shooting, gained a 59-56 advantage with 1:30 left. That's when CUW freshman Melanie Kulibert took over. First Kulibert hit a huge 3 to tie the game, and then she stole the ball and scored while being fouled. The resultant free throw made it 62- 59 CUW with :55 left and it looked like another typical Concordia finish.
The Eagles got back to within one on a jumper by Hannah Schultz with :18 left but Angie Davis appeared to sew things up with a layup that made it 64-61 Concordia with less than five seconds left in regulation. With CUW guarding the 3 point line, Gosh somehow got open enough to fling up a game-tying prayer that beat the buzzer, stunned the CUW faithful, and sent the game into overtime.
Neither team gained more than a 2 point advantage in the extra session, but Beckwith's heroics broke the final tie. "We missed so many bunnies...just uncontested point blank shots" lamented Falcon mentor Stacey Brunner. Add 3-18 shooting from long range and 3-12 shooting in OT and you have the ingredients for an upset loss.
Concordia, boasting an outstanding 61- 20 record over the past three seasons, will return over 90% of this season's scoring. Juniors Ferron (21 points) and Mayyou (18) plus freshman Kulibert (12) are part of a host of talented returnees. "We will build on this game and on this season," promised Brunner.

Concordia 66 Benedictine 52
The #1 seeded Falcons (20-6) got a stiff challenge from the Eagles (13-13) but moved on to the NAC semi-finals with their seventh straight win. Krista Mayyou led the charge offensively with a 23 point effort that included 11-11 from the charity stripe. Seven other Falcons managed between 4 and 10 points as CUW overcame 29% field goal shooting with another solid defensive performance.
Tamika Curtis, the second leading scorer in the conference, put in 25 on this night but none of her teammates reached double figures and the visiting Eagles turned the ball over 30 times.
Stacey Brunner’s cagers will host Edgewood on Friday night at 7:00pm in the Buuck FH. CU- Chicago and WLC tangle at Wisconsin Lutheran in the other semi-final matchup. The two winners play at 7:00pm on Saturday.

Concordia 70 Wisconsin Lutheran 58 NAC Champs Finish 17-1
Concordia's sixth straight win had anxious moments but Stacey Brunner's squad was outstanding down the stretch as they outscored second place WLC 70- 58 in the NAC finale.
CUW (19-6) trailed by as many as seven in the first half before rallying to within a point just before halftime. Freshman guard Melanie Kulibert, who scored a game-high 17 points, hit a pair of huge 3's as Concordia gained control and then pulled away in the late-going.
Although the Falcons missed numerous point blank shots throught the afternoon, their 7-17 3 point marksmanship was a key factor in CUW's seventeenth consecutive conference win.
Krista Mayyou, working her way back from injury, added 16 points for the Falcons while Emily Laete powered her way to 27 Warrior markers. The league champion Falcons open defense of their NAC tournament crown when they host 8th seeded Benedictine on Wednesay at 7:00pm.

Concordia 77 Aurora 62 BACK/ BACK NAC CHAMPS!!!!
It was a tight 32- 30 contest at the break, but CUW(16-1) fired on all cylinders in the final twenty minutes to claim the outright NAC Championship with an impressive home win over Aurora (11-6). The Falcons now lead WLC (14-3) by two games with only their head-head matchup remaining on the regualr season schedule.
Leading CUW scorer Krista Mayyou sat this one with an injury, but Concordia got 23 points from Angie Davis and 17 from Asia Beckum, plus a tremendous team rebounding effort that saw the Falcons gobble up 54 of 82 available boards to offset Mayyou's absence.
Davis, who along with fellow captain Christina Wingfield was honored on Senior Day, added 12 rebounds and four assists to her highlight reel. CUW, 18-6 overall, has won six straight.

Concordia 54 MSOE 36
On most evenings when a team shoots 26% and turns the ball over 23 times, that squad goes home with a loss. That was not the case for the Falcons in Milwaukee last evening, however. CUW's own air-tight defense was still able to carry the day as they struggled past MSOE 54-36 at the Kern Center. CUW held last place MSOE to a similarily miserable 27% marksmanship level and won the rebounding battle 54-36 with Jenna Ferron and Pearl Wallace each pulling down 13 boards.
The win assured Concordia (15-1 in the league) of at least a share of their second consecutive NAC Championship. The Falcons can win the outright title by defeating Aurora on Saturday in the Buuck Fieldhouse at 2:00pm.

Concordia 87 Rockford 38
Playing aggressively on both ends of the court, the Concordia women absolutely destroyed visiting Rockford 87- 38 in the Buuck Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The Regents came in with a 13-6 record and high hopes of defeating CUW while getting back into the NAC title chase. Instead, they witnessed a long range explosion by Falcon guard Asia Beckum who hit 6 of 9 from beyond the arc on her way to a 24 point performance as Concordia pulled away from the NAC field by improving to 14-1 in the league.

Megan Sopkowicz (15), Pearl Wallace (13), and Krista Mayyou (10) were other double figure scorers for Stacey Brunner’s league leaders, but it was a stifling CUW defense that forced several first half shot clock violations and frustrated the visitors into an early submission.

WLC's 75-71 loss at Edgewood gave the Falcons a 2 game lead in the conference title chase. CUW travels to MSOE on Wednesday before hosting Aurora on Saturday.

Concordia 61 Edgewood 60
Senior Angie “Ice” Davis connected on three crucial free throws down the stretch as CUW withstood a strong upset bid by host Madison Edgewood last evening. The Falcon lead was a precarious 58- 55 with :22 left when Davis knocked down a pair of charity tosses that provided breathing room. Then after a quick Edgewood tally sent the margin back to 3 points, Davis hit the front end of a bonus that negated Janelle Gosh’s 3 point swish for Edgewood at the buzzer.
CUW led most of the way, but the Eagles had gone up 55-54 with 4 minutes remaining before Jenna Ferron hit a pair of pressure charity tosses and Pearl Wallace put in a rebound hoop to set up the Davis heroics.

Wallace led Concordia with 16 points and Krista Mayyou added 14. The Falcons shot poorly from the field game-long (32%) but the 5-6 free throw shooting in the clutch was just enough. Megan Scheele was terrific for Edgewood with an 18 points, 19 rebound performance.
Concordia, 13-1 in the NAC, hosts Rockford (9-3) Saturday in another key conference matchup.

Concordia 74 Benedictine 56
Pulling away from a slim 37- 32 halftime lead, CUW methodically wore down the Eagles in the process of posting their twelfth consecutive NAC win.
Krista Mayyou (20 pts) led a balanced attack that saw six Falcons tally 8 or more points. Mayyou was 3-3 from beyond the arc as CUW hit a collective 7- 12 from long range and added 19 25 free throw marksmanship.
Benedictine superstar Tamika Curtis was held to 15 points by a swarming Falcon defense. The first place Falcons (12-1) face a crucial test Tuesday at Edgewood (8-3).

Concordia 58 MSOE 38
CUW's air-tight defense held MSOE without a field goal over the game's first ten minutes. By that time the score was 17-1 in the Falcons' favor and the rest of the contest was just a formality. Concordia led 37-13 at the half before resting their regulars for much of the remainder of the evening.
Pearl Wallace led Concordia, 11-1 in the NAC, with 16 points and was the only Falcon to reach double figures. MSOE, 1-11 in the conference, did nto have anyone reach double figures but battled hard, outscoring CUW in the second half to make the final tally respectable.

Concordia- Chicago 67 Concordia WI 65
It was one forgettable weekend for the Falcons who fell to 12-6 on the season with the white-knuckle loss to CU-C. CUW missed a potential game-winning 3 pointer with 5 seconds remaining; and then an uncontested layup that would have tied the game curled out at the buzzer.
CU- Chicago's perimeter quickness was difficult for the Falcons to handle from the outset with guards Ellie Bravo and Marche Smith shredding CUW's defense for 42 combined points.
The Falcons had excellent balance, led by Pearl Wallace's 14 point effort, but CUW turned the ball over 19 times. Additionally the Falcons were only 15- 24 from the charity stripe, missing the front end of several bonus opportunities down the stretch. CUW's Angie Davis was named to the All Tourney team.

Januray 26, 2008 CIT Semi-Final
Concordia- Ann Arbor 58 Concordia WI 51
Almost every basketball season includes a few agonizingly frustrating losses, but this game certainly figures to be at the top of CUW's list. The Falcons roared to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes before a litany of officials' whistles took them out of any rythmn and eventually slowed the game to a snail's-pace-free-throw-tournament for Concordia- Ann Arbor.
Stacey Brunner's cagers still led 48-35 with less than ten minutes remaining but the available CUW troops had been whistle-depleted to the point that Ann Arbor's valiant comeback efforts could not be curtailed down the stretch. Four CUW players fouled out in a game that just was not CUW fan or player friendly. Ann Arbor (9-12) hit 24 of 30 free throw opportunities and did not lose any players to foul troubles.
"You have to be able to adjust as a team to whatever adversity confronts you and we did not," said a disappointed Brunner.

Concordia 68 Maranatha 41
The Falcon’s 10th straight conference win came at the expense of the host Crusaders last evening. Once again it was the effective inside formula of forwards Krista Mayyou (22) and Pearl Wallace (16) points doing the damage offensively for Stacey Brunner’s cagers.
The twin posts combined for 13-21 shooting from the floor and 9-10 from the charity stripe. Mayyou's final success, a 3 pointer from the right wing, added her name to the elite CUW 1000 point club.
Concordia (12-4 overall) had a decisive 38-20 rebound advantage and shot 49% from the floor in the process of dropping Maranatha to 6-8 on the season. CUW also hit a season-best 18-20 (90%) from the line.

Concordia 78 Dominican 64
The Falcon women’s basketball squad won their fifth straight game (and 10th in the last 11 tries) on Saturday, but it didn’t come without some anxious moments. Leading 44-30 at halftime, Concordia watched as the Stars literally shot their way back into the game, tying the contest up at 50. After head coach Stacey Brunner burned a timeout, the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to secure the win.
Angie Davis scored a career-high 21 points, going 6-for-13 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line in 39 minutes. Krista Mayyou, approaching 1,000 career points, scored 14 and brought down 12 rebounds, while Pearl Wallace notched another double-figure scoring performance with 14.
Concordia outrebounded Dominican 41-32, and cashed in at the free throw line, going 22-for-26 while the Stars finished 12-for-17.
Despite a number of obstacles, including some early foul trouble, the Falcons improved to 11-4 overall, 9-1 in conference play, and resume play on Tuesday at Maranatha Baptist Bible College with tipoff at 7pm.

Concordia 71 Marian 51
The Falcon women’s basketball squad out rebounded Marian College by a whopping 52-26 total, and used the advantage to put together a big second half en route to a 71-51 victory on Tuesday, in the team’s first home game since December 5th.
In the first half, neither team took control of the game, with nine lead changes occurring in the opening 20 minutes. Eventually the Falcons went into the locker room up 29-28. As was the case when the two programs got together in Fond du Lac on December 8th, CUW managed a strong second half performance to turn a close game into a commanding victory. By the time all was said and done, the Falcons had outscored the Sabres 42-23 in the final half of regulation.
When looking closer at the rebounding differential, what was even more impressive was the fact that Concordia out rebounded Marian 24-6 on the offensive glass, which led to an enormous 20-1 advantage in second chance points. CUW is currently out rebounding the opposition by nearly five rebounds per game.
After getting to the free throw line just nine times in a 40 point blowout victory at Aurora on Saturday, the Falcons finished 20-for-24 at the charity stripe while the Sabres went 9-for-14. Jenna Ferron finished a perfect 6-for-6 at the line, while Krista Mayyou finished 6-of-8.
Mayyou tallied a total of 19 points and added 7 rebounds in 29 minutes, while Megan Sopkowicz added 13 points in her second game back from injury. Pearl Wallace registered her third double-double in the past five games, totaling 10 points and 12 rebounds. Wallace has now scored in double figures in four of the past five games, raising her points per game average to 6.9.
Concordia improved to 10-4 with the victory, having won four consecutive games and nine of the last 10. The defending conference champions are now 8-1 in league play, and next hit the court on Saturday at 2pm, from River Forest, Illinois, at Dominican University.

Concordia 80 Aurora 40
Concordia left no doubt, roaring to a 29 -8 lead in the first 10 minutes on the way to an 80- 40 win over Aurora Saturday afternoon. The host Spartans came into the contest with a 5-1 conference mark, but could not contend with CUW’s inside game as the lead stretched to 48- 22 by halftime.
Krista Mayyou and Pearl Wallace torched the hosts for a combined 45 points on 19- 29 shooting. The tandem also collected 20 rebounds between them as the Falcons dominated the glass 44- 31. Concordia’s seventh straight conference win kept Stacey Brunner’s defending NAC champions in the thick of the conference race. CUW hosts Marian on Wednesday at 7:00pm in the Buuck Fieldhouse.

Concordia 43 Lakeland 41
Trailing 40-29 with ten minutes remaining, the Falcons (8-4) clawed back to survive an upset-minded Lakeland squad 43- 41 thanks especially to some tenacious late-game team defense and Pearl Wallace heroics.
The determined hosts had their biggest lead (38-25) with 14 minutes remaining and were up 40- 29 after Megan Chart’s layup with 10:27 left. From that point on, the CUW defense proved impenetrable, allowing only a single free throw as Stacey Brunner’s team crept back into the contest.
Baskets by Jenna Ferron and Wallace trimmed the CUW deficit to 7 and Erin Meier’s subsequent 3 pointer provided new life at 40- 36 with 5:47 left. A Wallace layup at 2:10 ended three and one half pointless minutes for both teams, making it 40-38 Lakeland. Mary Dennewitz broke the LONG Muskie drought by hitting one of two free throws at 1:42 but CUW freshman Melanie Kulibert tied the game with a 3 pointer ten seconds later.
Tension mounted. After turnovers by each side, the Falcons got a Wallace steal at the :22 mark and it was also Wallace who hit what turned out to be the game winner off a Krista Mayyou assist at :11. When Lakeland’s KC Blahnik missed a jumper at :04 the collective sigh of relief could be heard in Mequon.
Sophomore Wallace led the CUW attack with 12 points on 6-7 shooting and also scooped up a team-high six rebounds. Meier added 9 and Ferron 7 against a tenacious Muskie defensive effort. Concordia (6-1 in the NAC) shot 40% but turned the ball over 23 times. KC Blahnik and Emily Agner had 8 points each to lead Lakeland (4-8).

Krista Mayyou (14) and Mel Kulibert (13) joined Davis in double figures.
CUW led 59- 53 with three minutes remaining but Caitlin Henry's pair of free throws eventually tied the contest going into the final minute. Concordia's Krista Mayyou missed with seven seconds remaining but the Falcons (7-4) got a quick turnover before Bekum came thru with the long range winner.

Mary Washington was ranked #1 in the country prior to their encounter with the Falcons but CUW kept the pressure on until the game’s final minutes.
Trailing 36- 30 at the break, Stacey Brunner's cagers were still within reach at 46-41 after a Pearl Wallace score with 14 minutes left. A subsequent ten point run by the victors provided breathing room and the deficit proved too much for CUW to make up.
Asia Beckum led the Falcons (6-4) with 15 points including 3-5 from long range. Wallace contributed 12 points and a dozen rebounds to the Concordia cause. Mary Washington (8-0) was led by Ashton Mitchell’s 20 point performance.

Concordia 55 Marian 42
Stacey Brunner’s squad, 5-1 in the NAC, is still searching for an offense rhythm, but another solid performance on the defensive end was enough to secure an important road win over Marian(2-1) on Saturday.
Both teams struggled from the floor with the Sabres shooting an anemic 26% and CUW only slightly better at 31%. That made for lots of available rebounds and Concordia’s Jenna Ferron gobbled up a game-high 14 of them as CUW outboarded Marian 53-35. Angie Davis and Krista Mayyou led the Falcon scoring effort with 13 points each. Davis added 7 rebounds and 3 assists to her ledger. The Falcons' fourth straight win was a thriller as CUW held on to defeat NAC rival Edgewood 55- 52. Post players Krista Mayyou (15 points) and Megan Sopkowicz (10) led Concordia offensively, but game-long 16-19 accuracy from the charity stripe and intense defense down the stretch brought home the hard-earned win.

Jenna Ferron’s only two field goals of the game, both in the final five minutes, provided Falcon breathing room as Edgewood shaved a 10 point deficit down to three and eventually missed a perimeter shot that would have sent the game into overtime. Ferron also provided a game-high 9 rebound performance. Megan Scheele was outstanding for the Eagles, finishing with 25 points and 8 rebounds.

Erin Meier (22) battles for a rebound against the Muskies
December 1, 2007
Concordia 73 Lakeland 49
Welcome back, Krista Mayyou! A 2-time all conference forward, Mayyou had been scoring well under her average this season, but that all changed against arch-rival Lakeland. The 5'10 junior destroyed the visitors from inside and outside; notching 36 points as the Falcon broke from an 8 point halftime cushion to a rather lopsided win.
The critical W, CUW's third straight, put Concordia at 3-1 in conference play while Lakeland (2-3 overall) dropped to an uncharacteristic 0-2 in the NAC. Relentless Falcon halfcourt defense wore down the Muskies and CUW won the battle of the boards 41- 32. "Our team defense was better, and so was our offensive recognition," offered Coach Stacey Brunner. "I'm proud of how my team handled this entire week."

PREVIEW
Gone are unanimous all-conference selection Kristin Ruppe and star point guard Erika Ensign from a team that won 19 straight games and advanced to the national playoffs.
"Last year was a dream season (the Falcons finished 23-4 overall) but this is a new team with new goals," said Falcon mentor Stacey Brunner. "We want to repeat as conference champions, and that will take concerted team focus from day one."
Concordia excelled off the court too in 2006-7. The Falcons finished 11th in the Nation in overall GPA for student athletes at the D. 3 level with a cumulative 3.457. Hardin- Simmons topped the Academic charts with a 3.664.
