Schultz 4th, Massman 6th At NCAA III Great Lakes Wrestling Regional
Adam Schultz (Jr., Harvard, IL) placed 4th at 197 lbs., and Joe Massman (Jr., Taylor, WI) took 6th at 149 to lead the Concordia wrestling team (6-4 overall, 1-2 NWA) to a 9th place finish out of 15 teams at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional at St. John's University. The top two in each weight class plus three At-Large Bids qualify to the NCAA III National Championships.

Adam Schultz
Schultz (21-6) opened with a 11-4 win over MSOE's John Lemmer to advance to the quarters before North Central's Vinnie Sapienza defeated him 9-4. Next, Schultz opened the consolations with a big win, by pinning returning NCAA All-American Wally O'Connor from Augsburg in 1:30 to begin his run. He then scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Knox's Greg Liebach, 4-2, to enter the place matches. In the consolation semis, Schultz used dominant riding and turning technique to defeat St. John's James Carlson, 14-2, to advance to the 3rd-place match and a rematch with Sapienza.
With the match in overtime and :15 seconds remaining, Schultz got in on a shot and was just about to complete it, when Sapienza picked up the leg and got on top, and secured a takedown with :01 second remaining in the overtime. In the last :10 seconds of the match, each wrestler had 3-4 opportunities to get the takedown in a wild scramble, but Sapienza got the score at the very end to win 5-3. "Schultz left it on the mat today," commented Head Coach Bret Corner. "He wrestled hard all day. His win over O'Connor gave him a lot of confidence. His last match with Sapienza was a very tight, well wrestled match. He is disappointed, but will look back at this as another step to get to nationals next year."
Massman (24-8) opened with a 3-0 quarter final win over Lakeland's Ben Chapman, who he had lost to in the conference final the previous week. He used a takedown in the 2nd period and solid riding to advance to the semi-finals. Massman then dropped an 11-2 decision in the semis to Augsburg's Willie Holst, the eventual champ at 149 lbs., and went into the consolations. Holst is currently ranked #3 in the NCAA III.
In the consolation semis, Massman was reversed with :07 seconds left by St. John's Drew Larson to tie the match and send it into overtime. Larson then secured a takedown with :02 left in overtime for the win. In the 5th-place match, Massman medical forfeited due to injury to place 6th. He is currently #6 on the career win list at CUW with 74.
"Massman also wrestled well, but I believe was hampered by injuries throughout the day. This weight class was stacked, and Massman needs to finish his takedowns completely to help finish off matches. He had a nice season, but is also disappointed that he did not advance to nationals. Both Schultz and Massman are juniors, and will look forward to taking another shot next year."
Clayton Neske (Sr., Mequon, WI) went 2-2 on the day at 285 lbs. Seeded #5, Neske opened with a pin over Concordia-Moorhead's Adam Westby, but then dropped a 10-2 decision to Augsburg's Andrew Witzel to go to the consolations. Neske (7-5) pinned Augustana's Pat Kilroy in 2:12, but then lost a 3-1 decision to St. John's John Linn to get to the place matches. In his shortened season, Neske won all his matches by fall.
"Neske just couldn't get it going today. He made some mistakes attempting throws that gave his opponents easy points. After being injured throughout the season, it was difficult for him to get in the groove. He is respected as a tough, big heavyweight, but this wasn't his day."
Team Scores: Augsburg 129.5, Elmhurst, 166.5, Concordia-Moorhead 114, North Central 109, St. John's MN 87.5, Lakeland 82.5, Univ. of Chicago 47.5, Wheaton 42, Concordia University Wisconsin 28, Maranatha Baptist 23.5, Pacific University OR 22, Augustana IL 21.5, Milwaukee School of Engineering 20, Knox IL 18.5, St. Olaf MN 17.5.
