Aurora 2 Concordia 1 NAC Semi-Final

Aurora (18-2-1) is the 25th ranked team in the country but the NAC champion Spartans got all they could handle from CUW’s vastly improved Falcons yesterday in the tournament semi-final.
Aurora got the first goal of the game at the 18:00 mark but the Falcons stayed within range for most of the contest behind excellent goalkeeping by freshman Mary Ryan who finished with 11 saves. The Spartans other tally came on a penalty kick in the 77th minute before Jaclyn Ventimiglia got CUW on the board with her 16th goal of the season. Ryan Middendorf’s booters (who began the season at 1-7-1) finished with a 10-9-1 record. Their only two losses in those final 11 matches were to UW- Oshkosh 1-0 and Aurora yesterday.
“I could not be prouder of this team,” said Middendorf. “We had excellent veteran leadership along the way and our very young team grew up in a hurry.”

Remember when the young Falcon soccer squad was 1-7-1 and appeared to be in rebuilding mode? That same team has reeled off nine wins in their most recent ten matches and last night upset Benedictine to end the Eagles 10-5-1 season.

Freshman Becky Ott scored the only goal of the match early in the second half and CUW was able to hang on. Ryan Middendorf’s booters travel to Aurora on Thursday (1:30pm) to play the mighty NAC Champion Spartans (17-2-1) in a Tournament semi-final.

CUW finished the NAC regular season at 8-4-0 after pounding the Inferno. Moving to 9-8-1 on the season, CUW is guaranteed a plus .500 record after starting 1-7-1.

The host Muskies got a goal just minutes into the match but CUW countered with 3 consecutive tallies before the half had ended in this crucial NAC encounter.Concordia (now 7-4 in the NAC) will be guaranteed a spot in the conference TOP 6Tourney if they beat Alverno on Saturday. The Falcons could move up in the pairings based on how Dominican and Benedictine fare in their finales.

Although the Falcons dominated throughout, it was a Jaclyn Ventimiglia goal at 59:56 that provided the match's only score as CUW improved to 6- 4 in the NAC. Katie Sloan was terrific in goal for WLC with 18 saves.

Caitlin Casey scored the only goal of the match in overtime as UW-Oshkosh ended the Falcon's win streak at five. The Titans outshot CUW 24- 6 but Concordia's Mary Ryan came up with 11 saves prior to allowing the game winner. Ryan Middendorf's booters host WLC at 1:00pm on Saturday in a return to league action.

The Falcons fifth straight win was never in doubt as eight players scored goals for CUW. Cathy Palese and Jaclyn Ventimiglia had two each with Ventimiglia's first score coming only :42 into the match. Concordia improved to 5-4 in the NAC while Rockford fell to 0-9 in the league and 3-11 overall.

Talk about a turnaround! Just a few short weeks ago CUW was floundering at 1-7-1 with no visible offensive firepower.
The Falcon win streak has now reached four matches and the goals are coming in bunches for Ryan Middendorf’s booters who evened their conference record at 4-4.
“Jaclyn Ventimiglia was playing at a higher level and faster pace last night and that energized us.” Ventimiglia finished with a career-high four goals as CUW dropped Marian to 5-4 in the NAC and 7-6 overall.

CUW sprang the upset by scoring twice in the second half to break open what had been a scoreless duel. DU (6-2 in the NAC) got a consolation tally in the final second of the match.


Ryan Middendorf’s booters improved to 3-4 in conference action with their third straight win. “This was an excellent win,” beamed Middendorf. “We outplayed them and deserved the W.”

CUW’s second straight win came on the road against CU- Chicago by a 2-1 count Saturday. The Falcons(3-7-1) got a first half score when Jaclyn Ventimiglia redirected Becky Ott’s setup at 31:45.
What turned out to be the game winning tally came when Kelly Paszek scored off an Angelina Pane assist at 74:17. The hosts got their only goal on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

A pair of late goals by Tracy Pollack and Becky Ott provided the difference as Concordia defeated Maranatha 2-0 last evening in Mequon. The two sides battled thru 83 scoreless minutes before Cathy Palese found Pollack for the initial CUW tally. Ott tallied on a breakaway in the final minute for icing.

It’s like a broken record for the CUW women’s soccer team. Once again they dominated a foe statistically but could not overcome two early goals in a 2-1 defeat to the Eagles. Concordia (1-7-1) fired 24 shots but only Jessie Christensen was able to find the back of the net in the match’s final minute.

Concordia had plenty of opportunities to pull the upset but ultimately MSOE (5-1-0) held on for a 1-0 win over the Falcons (1-6-1). CUW outshot the visitors but the Raiders’ Leah Kutz turned away all 7 attempts on goal. MSOE’s Mindy McDonald got the game winner early in the second half.

The Falcons made it a game thru the first half, trailing only 1-0 at the intermission. Four Aurora tallies over a 16 minute segment in the second half, however, sent CUW to a 4th straight defeat. Concordia hosts MSOE on Tuesday at 4:00pm looking for their first conference win.

St. Norbert’s Jenni Jacobsen is a quick and talented soccer player. She ran around and thru the Falcon defense yesterday, scoring four times as the Green Knights broke a 1-1 halftime tie. Ryan Middendorf’s booters (1-2-1) host Carroll College at noon on Saturday.

Despite dominating play for most of this hard-fought match, the Falcons were held to a scoreless tie by visiting Lake Forest last evening. CUWkeeper Mary Ryan was forced to make only 4 saves while the Falcons put11 shots on goal. CUW opened up the season with a split at the Carthage Invite over the weekend. After falling 2-1 to Viterbo, the Falcons overwhelmed Buena Vista by a 7-0 margin. Becky Ott scored 4 goals against BV for Concordia while Jaclyn Ventimiglia had the lone tally against Viterbo.
